Theory
& Literature:
Asset Based
Community Development (Kertzman & McKnight, 1993)
“In a
community whose assets are being fully recognized and mobilized, these people
too will be part of the action, not as clients or recipients of aid, but as
full contributors to the community-building process”  (Kertzman & McKnight, 1993, p.4).
Community Cultural Wealth
(Yosso, 2006)
Social capital- as the networks of people and resources
within a community
Aspirational capital -
“the ability to
maintain hopes and dreams for the future even in the face of barriers” (Yosso,
2006, p. 41)
Reflection
The Maywood
Project was extremely challenging in many ways. This project taught me the
importance of group dynamics and trust within your group, as it pertains to
completion of the project. As the fundraising chair, I faced scrutiny on many levels,  but having my fundraising group was very supportive.  Although, the fundraising group hadn't collaborated on any projects prior to Maywood, we all jumped right in without hesitation. The
fundraising group consisted of Katherine, Tam & Joy and we all came with
different talents, skills and gifts.
I couldn’t have asked for a more insightful, passionate, dedicated and
caring group. Our goals for the Maywood project was to be able to build
trusting relationships with the community provide financial assistants to graduating
seniors and leave an archive of information for the next cohort to be effective
and collaborative. It became extremely important for our group to meet and
exceed the expectations after our first visit to the Maywood community. To step
into a highschool and remember the times I felt hopeless gave me strength to give back to the community. Filled with so much
aspiration & vision but lacking the ability to foresee the path to obtain
it. Stepping into Maywood academy and seeing the affect of our mere persistence
seemed to give some hope and courage that a college education is obtainable.
Working with the community of Maywood made my heart smile and gave me the
energy and stamina to keep going. My favorite quote IS By John Quincey Adams
and it states “ If your actions inspires others to learn more, dream more,
become more and do more, than you are a leader” and this is the impact I feel
we made on the community of Maywood. I was blessed to have been apart of this
project!
